چکیده

Cases of holoprosencephaly which occurred in the west of Scotland over the past 20 years were ascertained from genetics, paediatric, and pathology department records. Fifty cases were identified of which 17 had an underlying cytogenetic abnormality. Of the remaining 33 cases, 26 were delivered after 28 weeks' gestation giving a birth prevalence of 1 in 26730. Twenty-one babies were liveborn and nine children are currently alive. All survivors are profoundly mentally retarded and most have seizures. Twenty-eight patients with non-chromosomal holoprosencephaly had a total of 23 sibs and three families were identified where there was either recurrence of holoprosencephaly (one family), a related cerebral malformation (one family), or mental handicap (one family) giving an overall recurrence risk for serious neurological disability of 12% (standard error 7%). We conclude that holoprosencephaly does not necessarily breed true and this observation should be taken into account when giving genetic counselling and attempting ultrasound prenatal diagnosis after the birth of an affected child.

BLOOD PRESSURE COMPONENTS AS PREDICTORS OF STROKE MORTALITY IN WEST SCOTLAND

The relative importance of systolic (SBP) versus diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and other combinations of SBP and DBP in the prediction of stroke have been re-examined in a long term cohort study of 10,541 men and women aged 45-64 in West Scotland. During a mean follow-up of 11.6 years 1, 616 deaths occurred, among which 160 (9.9% 80 male, 80 female) were due to stroke. In a multiple logi...

TECTONOMAGMATIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ETIVE IGNEOUS COMPLEX, SOUTH WEST SCOTLAND

The Etive igneous complex has intruded into Dalradian and Moine meta-sedimentary rocks in Devonian. Main rock types of the complex are granodiorite, monzodiorite, monzogranite, granite and diorite. Geochemical studies show that the magmas were of high K calc-alkaline, I-type and metaluminous nature. Application of discriminant diagrams to the Etive rocks indicates a possible within-plate tecton...

BLOOD PRESSURE COMPONENTS AS PREDICTORS OF ISCHAEMIC HEART DISEASE MORTALITY IN THE WEST OF SCOTLAND

The relative importance of systolic blood pressure (SBP) versus diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in predicting the risk of ischaemic heart disease (IHD) mortality is controversial. We have re-examined SBP compared to D BP and other combinations of SBP and D BP in predicting the risk of IHD mortality in a long-term cohort study oflO,541 men and women in the West of Scotland. During a mean fo...

Dietary patterns among adolescents in the west of Scotland.

Dietary data from 15-year-old adolescents participating in the West of Scotland Twenty-07 study were examined in order to describe current eating patterns and food habits. Comparison of the data with a 'healthy eating' index showed that less than one-third of the sample were eating a diet similar to that promoted by local health education campaigns. Multivariate analysis showed that adolescents...
